GRE (Graduate Record Examinations)

Introduction

GRE is a required entrance test for all MS programs, except Business, Law and Medicines, at all American graduate schools.

Almost all schools offering the MS program consider GRE scores as a very important basis of admission as well as financial aid.

It is a multiple-choice test administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) on behalf of the GREŽ Board. The GREŽ is administered only in English across the world.

Test Pattern

The GREŽ consists of 3 multiple-choice sections-Quantitative, Analytical, Writing and Verbal.

Apart from the traditional sections, the GREŽ includes an essay section (mandatory only for certain universities) called the Writing Assessment, which is to be taken on a separate day.

Total 1600 --- 60 150 minutes

Test Centres

These tests are conducted all round the year as they are Computer Adaptive but one should ideally register minimum 1 month in advance before one actually plans to take the test. You can directly contact the official testing body or the appropriate Regional Registration Centre (RRC) for registering at international locations.

Test Scores

Three scores are reported on the General Test:
  1. a verbal score reported on a 200-800 score scale, in 10-point increments

  2. a quantitative score reported on a 200-800 score scale, in 10-point increments

  3. an analytical writing score reported on a 0-6 score scale, in half-point increments

If you answer no questions at all in a section (verbal, quantitative, or analytical writing), that section will be reported as a No Score (NS).

    Scoring Mailing Dates

Computer-Based Testing-Score reports are mailed to you and up to 4 institutions, if you designate them on the day of the test, approximately 10 to 15 days after you test.

Paper-Based Testing-Score reports are mailed to you and up to 4 designated institutions, if you designate them prior to the test administration, approximately 4 to 6 weeks after your test date.
